The prestigious Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Awards (NHEA) weekend celebrated its 10th anniversary with 35 individuals and organisations recognised for their outstanding contributions to the Nigerian healthcare sector.

The event which held in Lagos was a testament to innovation, dedication, and excellence in healthcare. Key stakeholders, medical professionals, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers.

Three distinguished individuals received the Lifetime Achievement Award: Chief Varkey Verghese, MFR, Founder of Jawa Group of Companies, for his contributions to pharmaceuticals and philanthropy. Dr. Fidelis Akhagboso Ayebae, Managing Director of Fidson Healthcare Plc, for pioneering innovations in Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturing while Professor Uche Veronica Amazigo, for her exceptional work in public health and combating neglected tropical diseases.

Also, special recognition awards were presented to Dr. Benjamin Anyanwu, Executive Medical Director of Regions Healthcare, for advancing neurological care. Smile Train Inc., for installing solar power systems in hospitals across Nigeria, ensuring uninterrupted medical operations.

Professor of Medicine and Health Policy at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Muktar Aliyu, was also awarded for his global health contributions through research, training, and clinical care under the Special Diaspora Excellence Award.

The Chairman of the NHEA Advisory Board, Dr. Anthony Omolola, emphasised the importance of recognising excellence and fostering innovation, dedication, and collaboration to improve healthcare outcomes in Nigeria.

He stated, “The NHEA is a movement towards better healthcare standards and practices in Nigeria.”

A significant event highlight was the tie for Public Tertiary Healthcare Facility of the Year, jointly awarded to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including government officials, healthcare leaders, and representatives from supporting organizations like PharmAccess Foundation, Sterling Bank, Nigeria Health Watch, and the Global Health Advocacy Initiative.

The NHEA 2024 left a lasting impression, reaffirming the importance of dedication, innovation, and service in healthcare. The next NHEA will be held on June 27, 2025.
